During the 14 years that spanned his career in the Senate, Senator Mitchell was consistently reelected with as much as 81 percent of the vote in the largest margin in Maine history and, in 1989, becoming Senate majority leader.During his tenure in the Senate, he earned enormous respect from all sides. For six consecutive years he was voted the most respected member of the Senate by a bipartisan group of senior congressional aides. While in the Senate, Senator Mitchell served on the Finance, Veterans Affairs and Environment and Public Works committees. He was instrumental in the passage of such laws acts as the reauthorization of the Clean Air Act, the nation's first child care bill, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The historic accord that ended two centuries of bitter fighting took two years to achieve and was enthusiastically endorsed by voters in both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. He has received numerous awards and honors for this service, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the United Nations Peace Prize. Among the four books he has authored is Making Peace, an account of his experiences in Northern Ireland. Today, Senator Mitchell is chairman of the global board of the law firm DLA Piper.
